RARE BOOK IN TWO VOLUMES TITLED 'A COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL LETTERS AND PAPERS, CONCERNING THE AFFAIRS OF ENGLAND, FROM THE YEAR 1641-1660 FOUND AMONG THE DUKE OF ORMONDE'S PAPERS' written by Thomas Carte and printed in 1739 by James Bettenham of London. Thomas Carte (1686-1754) was one of the great English historians of the 18th century. Volume one is comprised of an eight page preface and 472 pages. Volume two contains 464 pages. Both volumes are bound in leather with stamped decoration on the spine and on the edges of the binding. Also on the binding is the title and decoration in gilt. The bindings appear to be original and are in fair to good condition with wear on the edges, on the spine and at the hinges. The covers are still attached to the spine although just by the rope ties within the binding. There is an old bookplate for A. Fenwyke and the name George Fenwick in ink in each volume. Also in ink are the signatures for Thomas Hunte and Abraham Symes. The majority of the pages are mostly creamy white in color with some age discoloration primarily on the front free page and title page and some light staining towards the back part of the first volume and some age discoloration on the first several pages of the second volume but otherwise the interior of both volumes are tight and clean. Each book measures 8.5"h x 5.25"w x 1.5" thick. |
